Peach Springs, Arizona dried up and roasted down to dust in the endless sun.

That’s what happened when they opened Interstate 40 and bypassed the town.

Veins collapsed along Route 66.  America’s mother road was silenced.  The Orlando Motel, the Cavern Inn and the Frontier Motel all shut down.

In a warm café with a noisy swamp cooler in Peach Springs, Arizona they told him the American west had already been discovered.  How every inch had been explored, mapped and settled, plumbed and plowed or otherwise scraped away and picked apart.

He agreed and told them about the new discovery, how it turns out there’s not enough water for too many people.

The swamp cooler kept squealing.  It was either the fan blade or a shot water pump.
