Seven storms crashed through and turned the place into a ghost town. Then another seven storms hit. After that, the town decided to come back to life.
But not much of a life. Only a ramshackle work camp where everybody kept quiet about their dreams.
They dug a 26-mile-long canal by day and shot dice at night.
Now and then there would be a fight. Every so often, somebody in Stanfield, Oregon got himself killed, usually the cheaters.
They never had to call in the sheriff from nearby Hermiston, Oregon. A body was buried and that was it.
