San Simon, Arizona never bothered to sweep away the dust.  On the town’s windowsills a century’s worth had piled up, caked on the brittle wood, dust from the days of the Teapot Dome Scandal.

“It’s too late for the frackers to atone,” said Caroline.  They were all in the cramped dining room of the little house off Kanan Dume Road.

“There’s been too much damage.  Too much is irreversible.  We can’t expect their remorse.  And while we can stand in judgement, what we actually do about it, that’s the hitch.

“And we can’t justify vigilantism.   We’ll be committing crimes, gliding past the rule of law.  We’ll be disregarding bought and paid for politicians and their castrated regulatory system.

“But we’ll be fighting back.”
