Princeton, Oregon trembled.  Evil was returning, racing back on a night train from Reno.

Cecile pulled herself up over a boulder and went down the canyon toward Caroline’s house.

Dim daybreak dropped vague shadows across the gray chaparral.  She saw some of life’s luster scraped away and wondered what forces could be at play.

Two more lives taken.  The two men sent to kill her lay dead in the gray sage.

It felt as if her values were coming unwound, even faster than before.  This must have been the work of seven deadly demons.  She could almost feel their assault.  Like bald eagles with hooked beaks, they plucked away at her values.

But when two men come to kill you, what choices are left?

Cecile came out of the gray sage down onto the dirt road.

Up in Princeton, Oregon, the stationmaster checked to see if the night train from Reno was still on schedule.
