Bishop, California rattled like a dustbin in a hot, dry wind.

Stiff breezes roared down from the dry throat of a thin blue canyon.

A snowboarder came into the café, told the bartender the hellhound was on his trail and he could only stay for three or four beers.

Then he asked the people at the bar if they knew who drove the 1963 Studebaker Avanti.

The cheerful woman with the ponytail said it was hers and she’d be happy to sell it to him.

It was tough to tell whether or not she meant it.

A few minutes later the two of them shot out of Bishop, California down Route 395, Kings Canyon National Park gleaming off to the right.
