North To Ganado
2026

North to Ganado they rode, top down through hot wind.

Above them spread an uncertain sky.  Below, the Navajo Aquifer which supplies the town’s water.  Outside of town on the Navajo Nation there’s no water piped into many remote homes.  Families use what’s known as haul water from community wells.

It’s been twenty one years now since the Peabody Coal Company stopped draining the Navajo Aquifer for a coal slurry line.  This has helped restore the aquifer’s health and stability.

This is old water, tens of thousands of years old, coaxed up from sandstone through wells sunk down at least 500 feet.

North to Ganado up in the Navajo Nation they rode, soaring over sandstone beneath an uncertain sky.
