On Fridays Amira, Caroline and Francine drove downtown and dropped the passports off with Sylvain.  His photography studio on Figueroa Street had been in business since 1952.  Sylvain paid Amira a thousand dollars apiece.

Amira was handed back passports in progress, with the photograph of its new bearer.  Back in Silver Lake, she would add the name and address the photographer ordered and return the finished product.
